Congratulations, to the Porto family! Porto’s Bakery & Café is featured in an ad from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The ad tells the story of how Porto’s Bakery came to be…first, selling cakes out of their home, then with Rosa and Raul fleeing communist Cuba with their children and just the clothes on their backs. Eventually, they opened their first bakery on Sunset Boulevard and have since opened four more locations…in Glendale, Burbank, Downey, and Buena Park. A location in West Covina is soon to be. Rosa Porto lives by this creed: “Everything in life is about giving back. You’re only as good as what you leave behind as a legacy.” And oh, what a legacy it is. Cakes that make you swoon, pastries galore, cookies, brownies, cupcakes…and bread, glorious bread… and rolls! So many to choose from…batards, baguettes and bolillos, challahs and ciabattas and more.
It’s the Downey, California location of Porto’s that’s featured in the ad and for good reason. Bringing in 3,000 customers per day, the bakery and café have assisted in revitalizing downtown Downey. And about that giving back? The Porto family donate more than a $1 million a year to help the homeless. Additionally, they provide Union Rescue Mission, an LA-area homeless shelter, with over $1.6 million per year in pastries.
